i had been avoiding the Harry Potter books, both on the grounds that over-hyped fiction usually falls short of expectations, and because i didn't think a children's fantasy author could meet the standards set by Diana Wynne Jones. so it was a pleasant surprise to discover that The Chamber of Secrets is actually a very good book indeed: well plotted, amusing, slightly dark, and full of imaginative detail, with the history of the chamber and its opening 50 years ago being particularly brilliantly realised. there are also some useful moral observations, including the thought that a person is not so much the talents they possess as the choices they make. and the satire of ineffective bureaucracies (Ministry for Magic), Daily Mail readers (Harry's uncle), and convention-bound adults in general is perceptively handled.i thought the description of magic use was the weakest element of the fantasy - years of study at school to acquire spell knowledge that amounts to little more than pronouncing a single Latin word per spell. and there was a bit too much of the Blytonesque, 'Christmas dinners were always marvellous at Hogwarts' stuff for my liking. but overall, i have to say i was impressed, and, having read the first and third books as well now, i think that Rowling, if she can cut down on the repetition (which reaches Homeric proportions), and the feel-good padding, has the potential to be not just a very entertaining writer, but also a very serious one.

The book Harry Potter and the Chamber of Secrets is one of thebest books I've ever read. I gave the book five stars because it wasreally exciting and it kept me interested through the whole story. I think J.K. Rowling is a terrific author. Harry Potter is a young wizard who goes to a school named Hogwarts. He'd been home on summer vacation with his Muggle (non-magic) relatives the Dursley's and they had mistreated him so much he couldn't wait for school to start. While he was there, Harry got a warning from a strange elf who told him that he shouldn't go back to Hogwart's because disaster would strike, but Harry was determined to return to school. The Dursleys had locked Harry in his room so his best wizard friend Ron, helped him escape in a flying car! They even ended up flying the car back to school. At Hogwart's they met up with their other best friend, Hermoine Granger. Soon though, weird things started happening, students start getting turned to stone, strange messages appear on the walls and mysterious rumors about a Chamber of Secrets start flying all around school. What's behind all this? You'll have to read this book to find out and you won't be sorry that you did.!

If you enjoy action packed, thrilling books Harry Potter and the Chamber of Secrets is the book for you! Harry Potter and the Chamber of Secrets is an excellent children's novel. It's exciting and full of laughs. So hop on the Hogwarts Express because here we go! Harry Potter is a wizard. Along with his friends Ron & Hermione they're off to their second year at Hogwarts. Dobby, a tennis ball-eyed house elf, has a warning, for Harry not to go back to Hogwarts! But Harry ignores Dobby and goes away to Hogwarts. Everything goes well until Halloween, when the caretaker's cat is attacked! The students live in fear of being attacked but just when everyone starts to forget about the attack a student gets attacked! That's when the chaos starts. One after another students start ending up in the hospital wing. But Harry goes on with life and still continues his favourite sport Quidditch until he breaks his arm in a terrible fall to the ground. Professor Lockhart a show off sort of teacher, tries to fix Harry's arm but instead removes his arm bones! Harry has a painful recovery of regrowing his bones in the hospital wing. But that doesn't stop Harry and his friends from finding out who the attacker is. They discover the legend of the Chamber of Secrets. It was made by the first Slytherin, so only the heir of Slytherin knows how to open & find the hidden chamber. Draco Malfoy, a bully and show-off type who is happy about the attacks is probably the heir of Slytherin. But Malfoy probably won't tell Harry because they're worst enemies. Will Harry & his friends find out who the attacker is? Will they find the hidden chamber? You'll just have to read this thrilling book to find out.
Harry Potter & the Chamber of Secrets is an excellent novel. I give it 4 ½, 5 stars, but I think it's a little scary to read to little children under the age of 4. But for children who can read & are 5 and up go ahead! Harry Potter and the Chamber of Secrets is stupendous. I liked it because it was thrilling, exciting, suspenseful and humorous. It was impossible to put down this book.
