Rating: - christopher moore-always 5 stars
For 5 years I have been trying to get people to read Christopher Moore. I always sneak his name in with just about every review I write. Want a laugh...read Moore. Want to shed a tear...read Moore. Want some terrific fiction that will float your boat...read Moore. Just type in his name and read the reviews of his books...the 5 stars will blow you away. "Lamb" is no exception. Imagine Jesus (Joshua) with a best friend named Biff. We are taken on a journey of Jesus' life, the life we never were aware of, with Biff (who coveted Mary, his mother.) They travel to the realms of the Magi, searching for answers. If you have no humor regarding religion, you will not want to read this book. However, if you are an open-minded person, read and LAUGH! Then go and buy Moore's other books. There is always an element of mysticism in them... also laugh out loud humor. I honestly cannot think of an author who has brought me as much joy as Christopher Moore...and I read a lot. P.S. He does answer e-mail.
Rating: - The Theology Makes This Book
This is primarily a look at Jesus' life not reported by the Gospels - youth through age 30 - as told by his friend and unknown disciple, Biff. The tail end includes the the three years covered by Gospels. This book is humorous. Some of the humor is clever, some is very clever and some is sophomoric (although still funny). What made me enjoy this book more, however, were the correlations Moore drew between eastern religions - Confuciousism, Hindu, Buddhism, etc. and Christian thinking through the teachings of Jesus. It gave the book depth beyond the giggles and guffaws. His interpretation of the portions of Jesus' life that were related in the Gospels were clever, still humorous and thought-provoking. Through the humor and philosophy there was a poignancy to his three main characters that will stick with me for a long time. There is the lost and unsure Jesus trying to figure out how to be a Messiah, the thoughtful and loving Mary of Magdalene and Biff, the wise-cracking inventor of sarcasm who is truly devoted to his best friend who happens to be the Messiah. The afterword is worth reading, esp[ecially as it pertains to Mary of Magdalene for whom the author- and Biff -ahs an obvious affection. My initial impression of this book was that it was going to be a light tromping through some humorous and absurd situations. It quickly developed a depth that made the humor secondary to the characters and the theme. I will look for more books by Moore.
Rating: - Those without a sense of humor need not apply...
This has to be one of the funniest books I have ever read. Moore has a talent for living "over the top" without appearing to. Please be forewarned - if you believe every word that is written in the Bible and are easily offended - stay away from this book. You'll be happier, we'll be happier - and it just works out best for all of us.Moore takes a vacuum of time and weaves into it a wonderful story about friends, growing up, and learning new things. He doesn't try to put the "messiah" up on a pedestal, and Biff, who wanders back and forth between full bravado and self deprecation, is so funny that it is hard to read the book without laughing out loud. My only disappointment will be if Moore doesn't follow up on this writing with a book about a blonde angel who convinces God to let him be Spiderman.
