Rating: 5 out of 5 stars - Read it.
Quite simply, unless you read Chomsky, you cannot possibly be fully appraised of what is occuring around the world particularly in regards to the role of America. 9-11 offers a much needed elucidation of the United States' barbaric foreign policy that precipitated the equally barbaric attacks on New York and Washington. The book is comprised of a series of interviews conducted in the weeks following September 11 . This informal approach allows Chomsky to present his ideas with passion and clarity and makes for a compelling and insightful read. Chomsky, whilst condemning that attacks, correctly points out that the United States has itself for decades, been actively involved in sponsoring and supporting terrorism, citing such well known examples as Nicaragua, Angola, Iraq, El Salvador, Chile and the Clinton administrations despicable bombing of the Al Shifa factory in the Sudan which for the most part has been ignored by the mainstream media. Indeed in the case of Nicaragua , the US became the only nation to be charged with "terrorism" by the UN.(A charge which they vetoed whilst subsequently escalating the destruction of that country). When one considers the amount of lives that have been lost at the hands of American policy in the Middle East alone, then the attacks of September 2001, can hardly be deemed unprovoked let alone unexpected. He rightly concludes that until the Bush administration and the nation at large, recognises the hypocrisy in which the United States indulges, there will be no resolution of any kind. Critics of Chomsky repeatedly state that he is biased in the presentation of his ideas. I fail to see how this line of argument can be maintained. One can not dispute the numerous damning indictments of the United States' blood stained hegemony and the appeasement with which it is met domestically. 9-11 is the most accurate, most intelligent discussion of the events of September 11 2001 and the circumstances that surround it.

Rating: 3 out of 5 stars - ignorant "freedom" nuts need not apply
No, this is not the best book to get people started on Noam Chomsky. It's short and overpriced (in my opinion), with a lot of repetition. However, it's refreshing to see someone NOT trying to capitialize on the raging racist nationalism of America by putting out another Anti-Osama Bin Laden diatribe. Chomsky instead questions what your nightly news will claim are 'facts,' and brings up valid points about the United States and its own heavy record of terrorism in Third-World countries. To those who brand him 'ignorant,' you couldn't be more wrong--the truly ignorant in society are those who watch (and believe) what they see on the news, buy into everything "America Inc." has to offer, and rely on their fists to solve problems. Then again, that's what our 'holier-than-thou' corporate government wants. Granted, many died in the 9-11 attacks, but how many more (civilians, not just terrorists, mind you) will die before this whole conflict is over? I'm betting it'll be an astronomical number that'll make most thumb-sucking patriots cheer.

I'd recommend "9-11" more for Chomsky completists than the casual reader.

Rating: 5 out of 5 stars - Please read this book before dismissing it
Do some people just see the name 'Chomsky' and immediately dismiss the book as irrational, Marxist nonsense? It's clear that many of the negative reviewers haven't actually read it. Sure, they might have cast their eyes over the words, but they can't have understood what they were reading. If they did, they would realize that Chomsky is NOT simply trying to blame America for September 11, nor excuse terrorism, so much as he is asking us to think critically about American foreign policy before and after the event and suggest some helpful responses to it. He actually DISMISSES as a "convenient belief for Western intellectuals" (p.30) the idea that September 11 was about notions of "social justice". He argues that September 11 came out of the collision of two things: America's unnecessary imperial presence in the Middle East, and the unnecessarily violent response to that by Islamic extremists. Ask al-Qaeda why they did it, and that's more or less the answer you'll get. It makes no difference if you love America or love Islam or hate or love them both. They're the facts. That's why it happened, and it will keep happening until America accepts that the world is not an oil-rich playground for its exclusive use, or until Islamic extremists recognize the their violent interpretation of their faith is utterly delusional. Preferably both.
