Average Rating: 3.23 out of 5 stars

Rating: 5 out of 5 stars - A book that helps explain the circumstances of teen crime
It is the perceptions that this book explores, namely, that the innocent youths of America really aren't so innocent, that the not so innocent youths can sometimes become violent criminals, and that, at least in this instance, an horrific crime involved a group of "gamers" whose only "game" was to fantasize a life of immortality, because their own reality was a little too bleak. The latter, a raw nerve for many "gamers," should not detract from the fact that this book chronicles a crime that truly happened because one "gamer" went too far. Rod Ferrell's fantasy world of cemetery walks, complete with blood-letting and medieval French settings, when mixed with his cruelty to animals and other early crimes, such as assault on his own mother, was bound to bring about a crisis. Too bad that Rod's crisis claimed the two lives of his friend's parents. The reporting in the book finely traces what lead up to the double murder, but because the subject of this book documents one teen's fantasy world involving "vampires" with "blood thirsts," this book may encounter controversy. However, the story must be told, and, at least, Aphrodite Jones has the courage -- and talent -- to tell it.

Rating: 2 out of 5 stars - Interesting Story Poorly Written
In The Embrace Aphrodite Jones tells the story of the murders of Rick and Ruth Wendorf by a self proclaimed coven of "vampires." The story telling is often flawed by Ms.Jones use of shifting points of view and highly "purple" prose.

Essentially The Embrace is an eye-opening account of lost teens in America that raises more questions than it really answers. The story of Rod Ferell and his followers was an interesting one if just for the fact that it opens a door on a world that most of us don't know about either by choice or plain ignorance. The children depicted in the book could have been helped if only someone showed interest and concern. More than the story of two murders this book is a morality tale of the childern who are lost in today's society.

Had this book been better written it may have reached a larger audience. If it is available in your local bargain book store it is worth the read but I wouldn't go out of my way to hunt it down.

Rating: 5 out of 5 stars - A gripping story, well researched and written.
This book had my interest from the very first page. Ms. Jones tells a true story that needed to be told in a way that makes one forget it is a true story. She takes the reader into the world of these teenagers and shows us how venerable our teens are...even the bright ones from the "good homes". This is a perfect example of what can go wrong, and how very wrong things can go, when parents assume that their children have the common sense of an adult. It is a timely tale in light of the teen/youth violence epidemic going on in this country. A must for anyone who has kids, or is involved with kids.
