Rating: - Give Often As A Gift
Admittedly, Krakauer is best known for the also-excellent book, 'Into Thin Air'..detailing a particularly tragic Mt. Everest expedition..but this, in my humble o, is the finer work. Krakauer writes with fondness and forgiveness for his subject, a young man who goes in to the wilds of Alaska..whose body was eventually to be found in an abandoned bus and dead of hunger. Originally this piece was printed in Outside magazine and contained some information that (he(the author) later believed) falsely depicted the circumstances of the death of Chris McCandless..so in this book, he seeks to rectify the mistakes and sets forth to invoke feelings in the reader of sorrow, sympathy (and probably for many people) rememberance of what it is/was like to be in your 20's and on a quest. Krakauer makes good use of comparisons between events in his own life and those in the life of McCandless to create passages that write of McCandless's wanderlust and determination..Krakauer goes into detailed (and awed) description of the miles and upkeep efforts McCandless puts on his 80's-era car during his travels. An amazing look into a tragic event. Sold me on Krakauer as more than just a nature/uber adventurer - he's a writer.
Rating: - Into the Wild was an insightful look at Chris McCandless
Into the Wild is an insiring true story of a young man's adventures, and unfortunate death, in (where else?) the wild. Jon Krakauer was an outdoorsman, which enabled him to empathize with Chris McCandless and give the reader insight into McCandless' mind. Krakauer's experience as a reporter is evident in his concise, detailed writing, yet he manages to make the book more than a collection of facts about a young man's death in the wilderness. Even if the reader does not agree with some of McCandless' radical ideas, he will understand them. McCandless began his journey into the wild soon after his college graduation, journeying westward from Atlanta. After his truck died, he continued his adventures on foot and by hitchhiking. His life came to an end as a result of starvation in the Alaska wilderness. The information used to write this story was gathered from people who knew McCandless, including his family, people with whom he stayed between adventures, and the truck driver who was the last person to see him alive. Although it is tragic, Into the Wild is a fascinating story and one is left with a feeling of awe at the power of nature and the courage of one man to embrace it.
Rating: - Captivating Human Drama
Chris McCandless, a young man from a wealthy family, college educated, intelligent, some one who apparently had it all. Looks can be deceiving, he gave away his life savings to charity, abandoned his car and most possessions, and set off, on foot for the last adventure of his lifetime. He hitchiked (or hoboed as he put it) across the United States, and ended up in Alaska. His goal was to live in the wilderness, although he was totally unprepared for Alaska's harsh winter. Many people tried to talk him out of it, but he was determined and stubborn. One person even gave him a pair of waterproof boots, as Mcandless was wearing only tennis shoes. In the middle of nowhere, he found an old box car for shelter. He had a rifle, and shot a moose for food. If he knew how to properly preserve the moose, he might still be alive. If he had a map to find his way back from a rain swollen river, he might be alive. The book is filled with many what ifs?, close calls, and Whys? I'm not sure anyone can answer why, But Jon Krakauer is a fantastic journalist and presents all the facts, letting the reader draw his or her own conclusions. Whas he suicidal, plainly stupid, or over-confident? I think he wanted to test himself. This book is truly a page turner.
